Last night was the first episode of the latest
Masterpiece Classic series; Charles Dickens' classic "Great Expectations". Because in general I'm a huge fan of all things Masterpiece, and more specifically because I'm currently reading another Dickens classic, "A Tale of Two Cities" with my 9th grade son, last night's show was a must see for me.
So far I like the show very much...Gillian Anderson is a suitably creepy Miss Havisham. Oscar Kennedy is an adorable young Pip, and Izzy Meikle-Small is young Estella. As with Downton Abbey, Miss Havisham's home, Statis House, plays a prominent role.
David Roger, the production Designer, said that they searched high and low through Scotland and Wales for the right house, eventually settling on Langlebury House. First they had to restore the house, and then they had to distress it to get just the right look.
The house had been a school and was missing details; fireplaces had
been stolen and windows were boarded up. But according to David Roger,
the house had the right geography and the right staircase. So they
plastered ceilings, built mantels, replaced windows...and then they
distressed everything... adding mould to wall paper etc.
The scenes of the Dining Room, set for the wedding, and left...to become the ghost of a celebration is quite wonderful. I can't wait for next week!
